"SATAN'S ANGELS"
Air warfare in the Pacific theatre was always messy,
and sometimes lethal. On this particular day, the 431st fighter squadron,
better known as Satan's Angels, makes a real mess of a group of Imperial
Japanese freighters. The P-38 at the left-center of the print aptly illustrates
the danger inherent in such strafing missions. After impacting the mast
structure of a ship, pilot H.N. "Pete" Madison found himself in quite a
predicament. The starboard prop was torn free during the collision and ripped
its way through the canopy. Stunned and inverted, with wounds to his head and
face, Pete resorted to some fancy flying and managed to right his plane. Landing
proved to be an equally difficult task, as Lt. Madison was forced to touch down
belly first and without landing gear. Pete survived to fly many more successful
missions.

"The Sinking of USS Indianapolis"
The USS Indianapolis (CA-35) was commissioned at the
Philadelphia Navy Yard on 15 November 1932. The ship served with honor from
Pearl Harbor through the last campaign of World War II, sinking in action two
weeks before the end of the war.
On 30 July 1945, while sailing from Guam to Leyte,
Indianapolis was torpedoed by Japanese submarine I-58. The ship capsized and
sank in twelve minutes. Survivors were spotted by a patrol aircraft on 2 August.
All air and surface units capable of rescue operations were
dispatched to the scene at once, and the surrounding waters were thoroughly
searched for survivors. Upon completion of the day and night search on 8 August,
316 men were rescued out of the crew of 1,199.
