Tex Johnston winning the first post-war race for the Thompson
Trophy at Cleveland in 1946. He was racing against P-51s, P-63s an F4U
and Tony Levier, who finished second in his modified Bell P-39Q,
leading all the way and bettering Roscoe Turner's speed record set in 1938
by 90 mph!

The unlimited class in the first Reno National Air Races was won by
Mira Slovak, flying an F8F Bearcat. Mira approaches the finish with Clay
Lacey just 1.8 seconds behind, followed by Ben Hall, Walter Ohlrich and
Ed Weiner.
