About Aviation Illustrated
Aviation illustrated Magazine was first published in 1995. This
high quality color publication was widely distributed in bookstores
and military bases though out North America and many foreign
countries. It was a sought after resource at most air shows in
Southern California.
Jim Bender, Editor and Publisher, describes the purpose and
mission of Aviation Illustrated in the first magazine.
“This publication is a cooperative effort of a broad
spectrum of parties actively involved in the aviation art world.
They represent the finest in their fields. From the artists who
painstakingly apply paint to canvas, to the galleries who
enthusiastically endorse their efforts, to the collectors who
cherish their works – all share a common bond, a true love and
appreciation for aviation. This takes many forms, including
artwork, artifacts, restoration projects, literature and the
collection of historical memorabilia.
Our mission in this publication is to accurately and
objectively present a full range of aviation art related subjects
in a manner that is both aesthetically appealing and informative.
In addition to the household names, we will strive to provide a
platform for new talent to attain the recognition they so justly
deserve. Each issue will feature new works by known and upcoming
artists, as well as those artists who were instrumental in
establishing aviation art as a credible art form. Through the
examination and exploration of the origins of aviation art we may
better understand and appreciate current and future trends.”
Aviation Illustrated has presented household names such as,
William Phillips, James Dietz, John Shaw, and Roy Grinell. As well
as presenting upcoming artists, many of which are now household
names.
Aviation Illustrated’s articles included “Flying the Largest Jet
Fighter” by Mike Machat and “Flight Deck OPS: USS Enterprise” by
Rick Linares. And restoration articles like “Keep It Clean! Basic
Conservation Techniques of Your Vintage Flying Gear” by Mick J
Prodger. The entire April 1997 issue was a tribute to the 50th
Anniversary of the USAF.
Aviation Illustrated stopped publishing after the unexpected
passing of Jim Bender in 1997. This was a great loss in the Aviation
world for both the well-respected man and the magazine he created.
Maria Bender, Jim’s wife and Associate Editor of Aviation
Illustrated, has now relit the torch to bring aviation art, history,
and collectibles back to it’s avid fans. This on-line version of
Aviation Illustrated will again present the best and latest in
Aviation Art, Articles, and Collectibles.
Back issues of the original magazines are available through our
store. As well as the aviation art and collectibles that were
available through the magazine. Advertising space is also available.
“Thank you for visiting us again. Take the time to explore
Aviation Illustrated online. Let me know if there is something in
particular you miss from the original magazine. And let all your
other aviation friends know we are back.”
